Netbook Laptop Or Mini Computer? How To Choose?

In our fast-paced environment where everything is accessible at the click of a mouse, laptops have recently evolved into mini laptops or netbooks. These netbooks have been strategically designed to keep you connected, provides better battery life while giving you the benefit of a PC on the go. Just slightly bigger than your average paperback book, it can weigh only as much as 3 pounds. This popularity has raised a lot of questions --- one of which would be how we can select the computer that is best for us.

It's important to be able to consider the following before you make a netbook purchase:

1. Know your purpose.

Surfing the Internet? Word processing for your homework? Spreadsheets and office presentations? If that is the case, then mini laptops would be suitable. The netbook can have less powerful processors than an ordinary laptop would have, so it can be ideal for students or e-mail use. If you are a power user that is looking to install heavy applications or video libraries, you might opt to find a larger drive since the mini laptops do not hold as much memory.

2. Plan your budget.

Figure out how much you can spend and list down all the prices so that you can compare. It would really help to shop around first to know where you can get the best deals. A lot of resources are available online, or you can also check your local computer retail stores.

3. Check the specs.

Make sure that you look at the screen size so that you can view entire web pages. 8.9 inch or larger screens work best and will be easier to navigate. Also consider the running time: the 3 cell battery may be lighter to carry, but getting a 6 cell battery will give you longer running time. Also, since smaller models would have smaller keypads, you should first try to type with it so you know that you are comfortable.

4. Check the software.

Computer stores would normally pre-install applications and software when you purchase a netbook. Is everything already installed and running? Feel free to inquire if there are any additional games, music or features that they can add in for free.

5. Windows or Linux?

While Windows is the usual operating system installed in most mini laptops, it is also subject to more malware attacks due to its popularity. Linux, on the other hand, has a smaller market share and is prone to less risk.

The only disadvantage with Linux is that it can be a challenge to install new programs and one has to fiddle with the command line prompt to do so. This will not be a problem with Windows, since its operating system is compatible with majority of the accessories and software programs that are available in the market. If you're not too techie-savvy just yet, then Linux might not be the OS for you.

Verdict?

Mini laptops and netbooks are perfect for users on the go. It is relatively less expensive than an ordinary laptop, but also has the basic features that you would need to get online or perform a simple computer task. Avoid the mistake of buying one without careful thought and consideration.
