What You Need to Know About Netbook Before Buying One

Netbook is probably one of the hottest gadgets now. Everyone wish to own one. But why netbook? Why not just the regular size laptop? What's the difference between netbook and the standard-size laptop? Do I really need a netbook or a regular laptop computer? These are the questions that you should ask yourself before buying a netbook.

The primary usage of a netbook is for web browsing and e-mailing. It is not meant for activities that require a lot of processing power and memory space, such as watching high definition movies or playing 3D games. It relies heavily on the Internet for remote access to web-based applications. Thus, netbook is designed to be different from regular size laptop in several ways.

First, netbook is small and portable. While the first netbook that hits the market is only 8.9-inch in size, the most popular netbook size today is the 10.1-inch version. There are a couple of new netbook models that come with 11.6 or 12-inch display, but those are not so common at this time.

Second, netbooks have lower processing power compare to regular laptop. Remember that it's purpose is mainly for Internet access and not for activities that requires heavy computing powers. That's why a netbook is designed in such a way that the hardware is just enough to run Internet browsers and some web applications.  A typical netbook will have a standard specs of Intel Atom processor, 1GB RAM, and 160GB hard drive. It does not have an optical/CDs/DVDs drive that normal laptop has.

Third, you will find that most netbooks out there run on 2 Operating System: Windows XP and Linux. And the reason is because these 2 operating systems do not consume much processing power and will run perfectly well on netbooks. If you want a machine that runs on Windows Vista or Apple OS X, then netbook is probably not for you. These operating systems require too much resources to run well which netbooks will not be able to provide. There are netbook manufacturers who tried to use Vista as their default OS, and the performance is just unacceptable.

And finally the price. It's relatively cheap compare to traditional notebook. It generally falls below $500, and can go as low as $200+. Any machine that tag higer than $500 are usually not considered a netbook.

These are all the basics that you need to know about netbook before buying one. There are lots netbook brands and models out there in today's market. To get the best netbook, you will need to do some research before buying one.
